Tribal Directory Locations: Arizona

Arizona has been home to Native American tribes for thousands of years. Compared to other states, it has one of the largest percentages of Natives residing there today. Some of the original tribes that inhabited the land included the Hopi, Navajo, Pueblo, Apache, Yavapai, and others. Of the numerous tribes, the Navajo maintain the largest reservation in Arizona. The Hopi people believed everyone should live in peace and harmony, which resulted in the tribe being the victim of several attacks. Several Hopi tribes settled on mesas to avoid warfare, an isolated flat-topped hill with steep sides. On the other hand, the Apache peoples were more nomadic and focused their energy on war. Because the Apache were mobile, they relied on hunting bison and other herd animals. Today, there are 22 federally recognized tribes in Arizona.
