Nebraska was home to several Native tribes throughout history. Still, some of the original inhabitants included the Pawnee, Omaha, Cheyenne, Ponca, Lakota (Sioux), and Oto-Missouria Nations. Natives living in Nebraska developed complex economic, cultural, and agricultural methods to survive in the challenging environment. Some tribes made villages with Earth lodges (made from the soil around them) for shelter, primarily relying on farming crops like beans, corn, and squash to survive. However, other Nebraska tribes were nomadic, following bison herds across the plains, training horses, and living in teepees to survive. Today, four federally recognized tribes exist in Nebraska; the Santee Sioux Nation, Omaha Tribe of Nebraska, Ponca Tribe of Nebraska, and the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska.
