<p>New Mexico has a rich history involving Native Americans, who have inhabited the land for over 2,500 years. The three primary tribes in the state include the Navajo, Apache, and Pueblo peoples. However, some smaller tribes occupied the area, too. Pueblo tribes are best known for their permanent settlements called pueblos, of which there are several still standing today. Other tribes in New Mexico, like the Apache, were more nomadic. Especially when hunting, skilled Apache warriors would build temporary brush shelters while tracking herds of antelope and bison for sustenance. Finally, Navajo tribes were very geared towards family life and lifestyle events. The Navajo traditions include numerous ceremonies, rituals, and songs to celebrate everyday life, like planting crops. Today, there are 23 federally recognized tribes in New Mexico and several historical and tourist attractions embracing Native American culture. </p>
