Tribal Directory Locations: Ohio

Native American history in Ohio is still heavily debated amongst scholars and tribe descendants. Still, the general consensus is that the state’s original inhabitants consisted of the Erie, Kickapoo, and Shawnee Nations. The Shawnee tribe occupied a majority of Ohio, while the remaining tribes lived in the north. One differentiating culture practice by the Shawnee people was their patrilineal inheritance system to dictate their kings (called sachems). In addition to the original tribes, several others migrated to the area during the 1800s. Natives living in Ohio knew the land was valuable and survived by growing beans, squash, various vegetables, and corn. Today, there aren’t any federally recognized tribes in the state, although some Native communities are attempting to gain federal recognition.
