Utah has a rich Native American history and was home to a select group of tribes, including the Ute, Paiute, Goshute, Shoshone, and Navajo peoples. Utah is named after the Ute tribe, further broken into 12 bands. Smaller family groups hunted and gathered together, and Ute communities would also come together for trading and religious ceremonies. Similar to other tribes in the West, the Shoshone people were nomadic, moving to different regions depending on the season. The Shoshone were also well-known for being exceptionally skilled hunters and gatherers because of their nomadic lifestyle. Nomadic tribes, including the Paiute, built temporary brush shelters and crafted baskets for gathering and storing food. There are eight federally recognized tribes in Utah today.
