<p>Wisconsin’s Native American tribes have a rich history in the state that dates back 10,000 years ago when the first tribes initially inhabited the land. These tribes farmed crops like corn, beans, and squash to survive in addition to selling furs via an extensive trade network that reached the Atlantic and Gulf coasts. Initially, the Menominee, Ojibwe (Chippewa), Potawatomi, and Ho-Chunk (Winnebago) peoples were the first to make Wisconsin their home. As European settlers arrived, these tribes fought for their independence despite federal policies of allotment and assimilation for more than a century. Currently, there are 11 federally recognized Native tribes spread through the state.</p>
